These sponges are an excellent replacement for the common sponges that need to be thrown away every other month and can't be recycled. Made from discarded fishing nets, a very resistant material that is supposed to persist in salty waters. If well maintained, it can last for about ten times longer than regular sponges. They are hand-sewn by a group of women from a poor community in the south of Brazil, generating income and supporting local work, both for these women and the fishermen who sell the nets instead of discarding them in the ocean.
